by Molly Gordon, Certified Professional Coach Take back your power and reclaim some of your time by carefully examining the reasons for your commitments. For example, are you constantly staving off chaos because of "little" commitments that have nothing to do with your personal goals? Examples of these crazy making extras can include baking cookies for school or work, attending a spouse's work-related social engagements, agreeing to set up a hall for a church brunch. How do you know when a commitment like one of these is appropriate and when it's not? I ask overcommitted clients to explain why they feel they must accomplish all that is on their to-do lists. Then I pose this question about each commitment: What happens if you don't do this? And to the answer I pose another question, "So what?" No, I'm not suggesting a cavalier and callous abandonment of all that is good, kind and neighborly. But I do suggest that we too often get ourselves wound up past all reason for fear that we will let someone else down, often someone of only peripheral importance in our lives. As a result we are chronically depleted, anxious and irritable. Next time you find yourself saying "I just have to do this," ask yourself these two questions: "Why?" and "So what?" Please share your frustrations and successes around managing commitments with the rest of us. © 1998 Molly Gordon
